Orsanmichele
Description
In this short tour we will visit the church of Orsanmichele.
Born to serve a completely different purpose it became a place of worship in the 14th century and was the church of the Guilds and Corporations of Florence.
The wealthy Guilds sponsored the majestic works of art that adorne the church both inside and outside, where each corporation got one niche and commissioned either bronze or marble statues, to some of the most notable artists of Florence, like Donatello, Verrocchio, Ghiberti and Giambologna through the centuries. From the second floor one has also a great view of the city center of Florence, but there is no elevator so be aware, there are some steps to climb!
